Avian influenza A(H7N9) is a subtype of influenza A viruses that was historically detected in birds. This particular A(H7N9) strain had not been previously identified in either animals or humans until it was reported in March 2013 in China, where it was associated with severe respiratory disease in more than 400 human cases, with over 100 fatalities.

Animal influenza viruses are distinct from human seasonal influenza viruses and generally do not transmit efficiently between humans. However, zoonotic influenza viruses, which may occasionally infect humans through direct or indirect exposure to infected animals, can cause a wide range of clinical outcomes, from mild illness to severe disease. Birds are considered the natural reservoir of avian influenza viruses.
