Introduction
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are contagious infections caused by pathogens (bacteria, virus, parasite) and are characterized by transmission from person to person through sexual activity and intimate contact.
Herpes Simplex Virus belongs to a subfamily of the herpesvirus family, which is a DNA virus that infects human beings and is divided into two serotypes, type I and/or type II. An estimated 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) have HSV-I infection globally. Genital herpes caused by HSV-II affects an estimated 491 million (13%) people aged 15–49 years worldwide. More than 99 % of genital herpes and 46 % of spontaneous abortions are caused by HSV-II.
The majority of HSV infections are asymptomatic and may never cause symptoms. In people who are symptomatic, HSV-1 and HSV-2 mainly differ by where the episode is. Besides, HSV-2 infection increases the risk of acquiring HIV infection by approximately three-fold.
