Monkeypox virus is a zoonotic virus that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus within the Poxviridae family, which includes several viral species capable of infecting mammals.

Animal-to-human transmission may occur through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of infected animals. Human-to-human transmission can occur through close contact with respiratory secretions, skin lesions, or contaminated objects. The incubation period of monkeypox virus infection ranges from approximately 5 to 21 days and may be followed by symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.

The BioPerfectus Monkeypox Virus and Orthopoxvirus Real Time PCR Kit is a real-time PCR assay designed for the detection and differentiation of DNA from monkeypox virus and orthopoxvirus. The assay targets the F3L gene region of monkeypox virus and the E9L gene region of orthopoxvirus. A housekeeping gene (RNase P) is included as an internal control for specimen quality and nucleic acid extraction.

The assay is compatible with a variety of specimen types, including tonsillar swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, serum, whole blood, lesion exudate, and scab samples.
