Hendra virus (HeV) is a zoonotic virus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae and is classified within the genus Henipavirus, alongside Nipah virus. It is widely studied in emerging infectious disease and virology research, particularly in the context of cross-species transmission.

Transmission to humans has been associated with exposure to body fluids, tissues, or excretions from infected horses, which serve as an intermediate host. Hendra virus infection has been studied in relation to zoonotic spillover and viral pathogenesis.

Following an incubation period of approximately 9–16 days, Hendra virus infection has been associated in research literature with severe respiratory and systemic manifestations resembling influenza-like syndromes. Epidemiological studies report a high case fatality rate in documented outbreaks.
