overview

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a group of clinically related conditions associated with hantaviruses in the family Hantaviridae (previously classified under Bunyaviridae). HFRS includes disease entities such as Korean hemorrhagic fever, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, and nephropathia epidemica.

Hantaviruses associated with HFRS include Hantaan virus, Dobrava virus, Seoul virus, and Puumala virus. These viruses are maintained in rodent populations and are transmitted to humans through exposure to infected rodent excreta or contaminated environmental materials.

In research literature, HFRS-associated hantavirus infection has been associated with acute febrile illness, typically occurring 1–2 weeks after exposure. Reported clinical features in documented cases include fever, headache, back and abdominal pain, chills, nausea, and visual disturbances. In more severe cases, studies describe hypotension, vascular leakage, and renal dysfunction.

The Hantavirus Real-Time PCR Kit is designed for molecular detection of hantavirus RNA associated with HFRS using real-time PCR technology. The assay supports research applications in molecular virology, zoonotic disease surveillance, and pathogen detection workflows.

The assay includes detection of Hantaan, Seoul, and Puumala virus targets.

Specimens can be obtained from human serum.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can hantavirus spread human-to-human?

Most hantaviruses do not spread between people. However, Andes virus is the only hantavirus known to cause limited person-to-person transmission under close-contact conditions, increasing the importance of molecular surveillance and outbreak preparedness research. BP LabLine will soon support Andes virus strain detection as part of its expanding hantavirus research portfolio.
  • How is hantavirus detected using RT-PCR?

Hantavirus can be investigated using real-time RT-PCR technology to detect viral RNA in research samples. Molecular RT-PCR workflows support early detection, zoonotic disease surveillance, and emerging infectious disease research. BP LabLine is currently expanding its assay coverage to include Andes virus detection capabilities.
  • What is the difference between HFRS and HPS hantavirus diseases?

HFRS (Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome) is commonly associated with Hantaan, Seoul, and Puumala viruses in Europe and Asia, while HPS (Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome) is more commonly linked to hantaviruses found in the Americas, including Andes virus. BP LabLine is developing expanded hantavirus molecular detection solutions covering additional emerging strains such as Andes virus.
  • Why is hantavirus molecular surveillance important for emerging outbreaks?

Public health agencies continue to emphasize early molecular detection and surveillance during emerging zoonotic disease events, including current Andes virus-related investigations. RT-PCR-based hantavirus surveillance supports outbreak research, virology studies, and infectious disease preparedness workflows.
  • What hantavirus strains does this RT-PCR kit detect?

This Research Use Only (RUO) real-time RT-PCR assay currently supports detection of Hantaan virus, Seoul virus, and Puumala virus RNA for molecular research and zoonotic surveillance applications. Additional hantavirus strain coverage, including Andes virus, is planned in future product expansions.
