Monkeypox virus is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus within the Poxviridae family. The Orthopoxvirus genus also includes variola virus (the causative agent of smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in smallpox vaccines), and cowpox virus. In humans, monkeypox infection typically presents with symptoms similar to but generally milder than smallpox.

The BioPerfectus Monkeypox Virus / Varicella-zoster Virus / Variola Virus Real Time PCR Kit is a real-time PCR assay designed for the detection of nucleic acids from multiple viral targets. The assay includes specific primer and probe sets targeting the F3L gene for monkeypox virus, the ORF38 gene for varicella-zoster virus, and the B9R/B10R genes for variola virus. A housekeeping gene (RNase P) is included as an internal control.

The assay is compatible with a range of specimen types, including tonsillar swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, serum, whole blood, lesion exudate, and scab samples.
