Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4, is a member of the Herpesviridae family. EBV infection is highly prevalent worldwide, with most individuals infected during childhood. EBV is associated with a range of clinical conditions, including infectious mononucleosis, chronic active EBV infection, EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome. It has also been linked to several malignancies, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, NK/T-cell lymphoma, and certain gastric carcinomas.

EBV is primarily transmitted through saliva and may also be transmitted through blood transfusion or organ transplantation. Laboratory detection methods include serological testing and nucleic acid-based assays. Appropriate laboratory practices and trained personnel are required for molecular testing workflows.
