Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe disease affecting humans and non-human primates. The virus is zoonotic in origin and has been associated with transmission from wild animals such as fruit bats, porcupines, and non-human primates to humans. Human-to-human transmission can occur through direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as with contaminated surfaces and materials.

The average case fatality rate of EVD is approximately 50%, with historical outbreaks showing rates ranging from 25% to 90%.
