There are four types of influenza viruses: A, B, C and D. Wild aquatic birds, including gulls, terns, and shorebirds, as well as wild waterfowl such as ducks, geese and swans, are considered natural reservoirs of avian influenza A viruses.

Avian influenza A viruses are classified into low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) A viruses and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A viruses. HPAI viruses can cause severe disease and high mortality in infected poultry, while LPAI viruses generally cause milder infections. Only some avian influenza A(H5) and A(H7) viruses are classified as HPAI strains, while most circulating H5 and H7 viruses in birds are low pathogenic. HPAI A(H5) or A(H7) infections in poultry may result in systemic disease with mortality rates reaching up to 90%–100% in chickens, often within 48 hours. Both HPAI and LPAI viruses can spread rapidly within poultry populations. Avian influenza A viruses rarely infect humans, but the most commonly reported subtypes associated with human infections include H5, H7 and H9.

The BioPerfectus Avian Influenza Virus (H5/H7/H9) Real Time PCR Kit is a real-time PCR assay designed for the detection and differentiation of RNA from avian influenza virus subtypes H5, H7 and H9. The assay is compatible with respiratory specimens such as nasopharyngeal swabs and oropharyngeal swabs.
